A Ship’s Calling for Trombone ( or Euphonium) and Piano

About the Piece:

Timing : 2’15”

Difficulty: Intermediate

Why: Range goes up to a G at times.

This song is written in the viewpoint of a ship lost at sea. I wrote it while at my first Pennsic in 2013.

This version sits very well on the instrument and it is suited for a player looking for a shorter, pretty piece to add to their recital or for a teacher looking for a simple lyrical solo for a student developing their legato playing and/ or their high range.  This gorgeous elody is also a crowd pleaser!

The Original Lyrics are:

There’s a wind off the sea,

and it’s calling to me.

to a far away land I need to be.

Oer every wave and gale

I will boast my brave sail

to the starlight and sun towards destiny.

Though the storms they may weather my hull,

sail starboard with the heart of a gull

I don’t know where I’m going but faith will guide me home

but until then I go it alone.
