Being a musician in an English class can have its perks. Today is a lesson in being open to any opportunity that may open up unexpectedly to have one’s music performed and exposed to an unlikely audience. When I began taking this class, it was discovered through introductions that we had four musicians; a violin, trumpet, french horn, and trombone (me). When I announced that I compose in my introduction, the instructor seized the opportunity and offered the extra credit opportunity of a semester. My task was to compose a short piece for the four of us musicians of varying ability and write an essay about collaboration.
So far the piece is composed (you can listen to it here) and is called The Essay because of the nature of the assignment. The piece will be videotaped and shown to the class. Stay tuned for a video in the coming week and blog entry about the collaboration experience.
